2025: Your Year of Possibility

As we think about the start of 2025 there’s a unique energy in the air—a chance to pause, reflect, and set intentions for what lies ahead. For me, 2025 holds a particularly significant milestone: I’ll be turning 50. 

As a kid, I thought 50 sounded so old. Now that I’m here, I can’t help but laugh and wonder, “How is it possible that I’m 50?” I don’t feel it most days, though my grey hairs and crow’s feet gently remind me that, yes, it has arrived. Life moves faster than we expect, and this milestone has been a wonderful nudge to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned—and continue to learn—on this journey. 

I’d like to share my Top 5 Lessons at 50 in the hopes they resonate with you as you set your own intentions for 2025:

1. Cherish Your Relationships 

Life is busy, and distractions—especially our phones—pull us away from what truly matters. The moments spent connecting with loved ones are priceless. I feel so fortunate to share life with my wife, Kelly, and our four incredible kids, who teach me every day how important it is to be present. 

Pro Tip: Set the phone down, look up, and savor the time you have with the people you care about. Presence is the key. Some of my favorite moments, like driving my daughter to school, are simple yet deeply meaningful. On the mornings I stay present, we have conversations where I get to know what’s in her head and heart. Those moments stay with me long after the drive. 

2. Your Health Matters 

They say, “If you don’t take care of your body, where else will you live?” And honestly, they’re not wrong! My parents remind me of this every time we talk—they’re often comparing aches and pains like a scoreboard. I get it. On days without an ache or pain (rare as they are), I celebrate! 

For me, daily movement is non-negotiable. Some days I modify my workouts to accommodate whatever’s bothering me, but the payoff is always worth it. Staying active allows me to hike, bike, and ski with my family and friends almost as well as I did at 30. My goal? To keep moving for as long as I can so I don’t miss out on life’s adventures. 

3. Help Out Where You Can 

There’s so much good happening in the world, and being part of it brings incredible meaning to life. I’ve served on nonprofit boards for over 15 years, and currently, I’m the Board President of EarthCorps. Whether I’m out in the field removing invasive species or planting trees, it’s a privilege to contribute to something bigger than myself.

4. Don’t Sleepwalk Through Life 

It’s easy to fall into routines, but those routines can dull the magic of life. One of the best ways to stay engaged is to shake things up every 90 days. 

Try something new—a different restaurant, a weekend getaway to somewhere you’ve never been, a unique hobby, or even a book outside your usual genre. Go to a comedy show, take a dance class, or volunteer for a cause you’ve always admired. These little adventures can reawaken your sense of curiosity and keep life vibrant. 

5. Get Present to the Moments 

Presence is a lifelong practice. I try to meditate every morning, and while my mind often races with the day ahead, it helps me stay aware of how much I need to anchor myself in the now. 

When I’m present, I’m less likely to miss out on moments with loved ones or the small joys of life. Whether it’s a conversation with a friend, a sunset, or a quiet moment of gratitude, the more present I am, the more grounded and alive I feel.
