The Heart of Experience Momentum: Why Connection is Everything
Written by Shanon Tysland | Founder, CEO at Experience Momentum
The Power of Connection
“Connection is why we’re here. We are hardwired to connect with others; it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it, there is suffering.”
I’ve always loved this quote because I see its truth play out in my life every day. As a husband, father of four, business owner, and leader of an incredible team, I have countless opportunities to connect in meaningful ways. Some of the most fulfilling moments are the simplest—like having breakfast with my daughter five days a week and driving her to school. It starts out quiet, a little groggy, but by the time we’re on the road, we’ve found our rhythm, sharing stories, thoughts, and laughter. It’s our time, and I cherish it deeply.
At Experience Momentum, connection is woven into our DNA. The very first words of our mission statement are: "To connect with..."—because we know that meeting people where they are on their journey, whether in fitness, health, or life, is where the real magic happens. We don’t always get it right, but we’re committed to being better and fostering meaningful relationships.
Connecting Through Environmentalism: The Winter Stoke Party
A few weeks ago, we hosted our Winter Stoke Party—our annual event to raise money for Protect Our Winters (POW), an incredible environmental nonprofit advocating for policy solutions to combat climate change. But beyond the fundraising, what made this event special was the connection it created.
We had an amazing lineup of community partners—Northwest Avalanche Center, Kuma Coffee, City Sweats, SheJumps, Ascent Outdoors, Premiums for the Planet, Kula Cloth, Fremont Brewing, and Crystal Mountain—all coming together to support a shared mission. Seeing over 60 people gather, contribute, and raise $1,000 for POW wasn’t just about the money—it was about the power of a shared purpose. It was about people coming together, over a drink, over a conversation, over a shared love for the outdoors, and making a real impact.
As I walked around that evening, listening to stories, seeing connections being made, watching people laugh and share moments, it was a reminder of why we do what we do. These moments fill my heart and fuel my passion.
Connecting Through Movement: Friday Night Lights
Now, we get to do it again—with Friday Night Lights.
For three weeks, we will gather in our Lynnwood, Fremont, and Mill Creek locations to take on workouts announced by CrossFit. But this event is so much more than fitness—it’s a test of vulnerability, courage, and support.
I’ve been doing the CrossFit Open for over a decade, and every year, I see something incredible: people of all fitness levels coming together, pushing their limits, and being lifted by the energy of the community. Some athletes are competing for the first time. Some are veterans chasing personal bests. But all of them share one thing—the power of connection.
There’s something unique about working at your physical threshold with others cheering you on. It’s a deeply human experience. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s vulnerable. And yet, it’s in that moment—when your body is screaming, when doubt creeps in, when you think you can’t go on—that the power of the community pushes you forward.
I’ll never forget watching one of our clients in her mid-70s take on a deadlift during an event like this. She had never lifted weights before her 60s. Now, she’s set state records in weightlifting. Think about that. Her journey started with one connection, one step, one experience that changed everything.
Why Connection Matters
Whether it's the Winter Stoke Party rallying people around climate action or Friday Night Lights bringing athletes together through challenge and encouragement, these moments remind us of something bigger:
Connection is fuel—for our bodies, our minds, and our hearts.
It drives us forward. Whether it’s through a high-five after a tough workout or a conversation over coffee at an event, these interactions keep us going.
It empowers us. Cheering someone on as they push their limits isn't just about encouragement—it's about showing them what’s possible.
It creates change. When we come together—whether to lift a barbell or support an environmental cause—we amplify our impact.
Come Connect With Us
I challenge you to be intentional about connection this week. It might be as simple as checking in on a friend, showing up for someone who needs support, or making the time to engage with your community in a meaningful way.
And if you’re ready for something that will challenge you, empower you, and connect you with an amazing community, then join us for Friday Night Lights.
We’ll be hosting this event for the next three Fridays at our Lynnwood and Fremont locations, and on Saturday mornings at Mill Creek. Whether you’re an experienced fitness athlete or a first timer looking to push outside your comfort zone—we want you there.
Come feel the energy. Come be part of something bigger. Come connect.
We’ll see you there.
